Summary

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is the runaway TikTok must-read fantasy novel of the year。 If you loved Ninth House and A Deadly Education, you'll love this。

The world's best young magicians accept the opportunity of a lifetime。
Six are chosen。 Only five will walk away。

The Alexandrian Society is a secret society of magical academicians, the best in the world。 Their members are caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity。 And those who earn a place among their number will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams。 Each decade, the world's six most uniquely talented magicians are selected for initiation - and here are the chosen few 。 。 。

- Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds。
- Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself。
- Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched。
- Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe。
- Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world。 He need only ask。

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation。 During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society's archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge。 Five, they are told, will be initiated。 One will be eliminated。 If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive。 Most of them。

Lots of potential for an intelligent, academic Adult series set around magical mystery and fantasy。 But my god, the pages and pages and PAGES of philosophising, at the expense of plot and narrative, made it hard work! Somewhere In there is a decent story and interesting characters but your need to dig deep。 Am thrilled the series has been picked up by a publisher as Hopefuly a good editor will keep the intelligent discussion (while still cutting it by ten) and focus on narrative going forwards

While the middle did drag a little the ending definitely made up for it。 I can’t wait for the sequel。

I feel conflicted about this one。 Plot was great, vibes were right。 But I wish she'd given more importance to the characters themselves, spent time developing their relationships and personalities。 The lack of that is what killed the book for me, because I just couldn't love any of them。 I feel conflicted about this one。 Plot was great, vibes were right。 But I wish she'd given more importance to the characters themselves, spent time developing their relationships and personalities。 The lack of that is what killed the book for me, because I just couldn't love any of them。 。。。more

This was one of my first ~serious~ reads as I got back into reading this year, I started to find my love for reading for fun again in 2021, and most of the books I've read have been light-hearted romance novels。 However, I was intrigued by The Atlas Six, taking about 3-4 months to actually start reading it。 I loved the variety of characters and learning about their backstories, as well as how the world came together。 Seeing the characters work together and grow was one of my favorite parts。 I wi This was one of my first ~serious~ reads as I got back into reading this year, I started to find my love for reading for fun again in 2021, and most of the books I've read have been light-hearted romance novels。 However, I was intrigued by The Atlas Six, taking about 3-4 months to actually start reading it。 I loved the variety of characters and learning about their backstories, as well as how the world came together。 Seeing the characters work together and grow was one of my favorite parts。 I will say that I wish Reina had more chapters, I would have loved to see her powers more in-depth but I hope that the next books showcase that! 。。。more

I love the idea of this book。 The characters are delicious and the plot is exciting and definitely lives up to expectations。 However, finishing this book was a bit painful。 It got caught up in its own philosophical reasonings and self proclaimed brilliance that it was hard to get through。 It tried to make so many profound points about human nature and society that pretty much none of them stuck or felt all that important。

I get why some people hate this book。 I really do。 That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was: the intersection of science, magic, and theories of time and relativity that are so far above my pay grade, it’s ludicrous。 Will this book read as pretentious bullshit to some people? Yes。 Was I entertained despite the heavy helping of purple prose and the thematic, bullshit way everyone in this book spoke to each other? Also yes。 At some point, you have to let go and let god, and realize that, I get why some people hate this book。 I really do。 That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was: the intersection of science, magic, and theories of time and relativity that are so far above my pay grade, it’s ludicrous。 Will this book read as pretentious bullshit to some people? As for the characters themselves, some are more compelling than others。 But I’m going to reserve any judgement in the hopes of development yet to come。 Here’s to starting off 2022 with a bang (and a five-star review)。 。。。more

A secret society with enemies unknown and 6 people who are brought for initiation。 It was fun to watch the characters evolve and devolve as they came to reality of what initiation was and how they worked with and against each other constantly。 The turn at the end of the book was unexpected to say the least but I'm excited to see where this story goes in future books。 A secret society with enemies unknown and 6 people who are brought for initiation。 It was fun to watch the characters evolve and devolve as they came to reality of what initiation was and how they worked with and against each other constantly。 The turn at the end of the book was unexpected to say the least but I'm excited to see where this story goes in future books。 。。。more

I feel like at some points this book was enjoyable however it was just very wordy and overly prestigiously written。 I liked most of the characters but adding to that there wasn’t really any distinct relationships so I didn’t have very much connection to any friendships etc。 I also felt like the plot was very irrelevant throughout majority of the book so I was kind of waiting for something to happen very often。 There weren’t many plot twists either。 Aside from that I really liked Libby and Triste I feel like at some points this book was enjoyable however it was just very wordy and overly prestigiously written。 I liked most of the characters but adding to that there wasn’t really any distinct relationships so I didn’t have very much connection to any friendships etc。 I also felt like the plot was very irrelevant throughout majority of the book so I was kind of waiting for something to happen very often。 There weren’t many plot twists either。 Aside from that I really liked Libby and Tristen as characters and I honestly liked most of them。 I also enjoyed the vibe of the book and found it very descriptive so it was easily imagined while reading。 The ending of the book provides a great future for the Atlas Six story and I think that the second book will have a much more prominent plot then this one。 So I am looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

Storytelling’s a bit clunky but this was a pretty fun take on a school-for-people-who-do-magic story。 Fairly dark, some legitimate complexity。 I just think it would have been better to tell the story with a single narrator rather than multiple。

I’ve heard lots of mixed reviews on the book, and to be honest I didn’t really go into this book with many expectations or feelings。 I knew that it gave off very dark academia vibes and secret societies are my fave so I was intrigued。 I’m so glad I got this book as a Christmas gift because it has become one of my fave books of all time now! I cannot wait for her to release the rest of the series because I will devour them up! DNF at 50%。 What an insufferable bunch of characters。 I did not like a single one。 It made it extremely hard to want to keep reading。 I also feel like so much was said without even saying at all。 There was a lot of unexplained parts of the magic system and also a ton of complicated random things thrown it。 I was super disappointed because there was so much hype around this book。

4。5 stars。This book was one hell of a journey!Possible spoilers ahead。I think this book has a nice dark academia feel to it - it revolves around a group of 6 extraordinary magicians in their quest to quench their thirst for knowledge and power。 It's filled with libraries, books, empirical and scientific discussions, a lot of research and experimentation, as well as a lot of tension and a dark undertones to the plot。 I was absolutely enthralled by the aesthetic of this book ( that was more felt, 4。5 stars。This book was one hell of a journey!Possible spoilers ahead。I think this book has a nice dark academia feel to it - it revolves around a group of 6 extraordinary magicians in their quest to quench their thirst for knowledge and power。 It's filled with libraries, books, empirical and scientific discussions, a lot of research and experimentation, as well as a lot of tension and a dark undertones to the plot。 I was absolutely enthralled by the aesthetic of this book ( that was more felt, than read, but I will get into it later。。。)。 It also borrows some elements from fantasy and science fiction, which makes it a book able to please various demographics。It was also a welcomed change of pace from the usual mainstream books that are normally recommended on social media, since instead of a bland YA with boring teenage characters, we are served with a novel that feels more like a suspense NA, with somewhat of a good build up, superbly developed young adult characters, and an intrinsicly complex plot。Even the way the author writes this book managed to capture my attention - in an almost presumptuously academic way that might be off putting for some。 The dialogues and narration of the story itself are not the easiest to comprehend at first, as at times it is filled with scientific terms or philosophical arguments。 But it made me feel smart, and once you preservere after that first impact, the writting is not that hard to follow。I would consider the 2 only flaws of this book to be the following:- I felt that the description of characters, spaces, and even of sequences in the book sometimes to be a bit lacklustre。 Half way through the book, I was trying to connect the fanart of the book to each character, but failed to do so。 Only then did I realize that I had no idea what the characters looked like at all。 I think the focus of the author was more on the emotional and intangible aspects of the characters。 But even so, things like the description of the spaces they are in (like the library, or their homes, etc), are barely touched upon。 At times, even sequences of the book became confusing as details of changes of time, place or dimension failed to be provided。- For the majority of the book (except for the last 100 or so pages), nothing was happening。 Besides some bonding, minor conflicts, research and character development, there was no meaningful aspect to the plot。 Or so it seemed。。。 The truth is, there is this almost imperceptible build up, a tension that goes unnoticed, that kept me from putting this book down。 And it all colapses on the last 100 pages, where the «true» plot of the series is introduced。The 2 best aspects of this book, I would say, are the characters and the plot twists。The characters are amazingly built - no two characters are the same。 Thanks to this great characterization, every POV was unique and truly felt like we were inside each character's own head。 Not all characters were «good» (there were some characters with heavy morally grey mindsets) but I found them all lovable。 Some more powerful than others, some more useful, but all had interesting personalities, back stories and goals。My top 3 characters include Libby, Tristan and Parisa (in no specific order)。Libby felt awfully relatable。 She felt like me - like some next door girl, who keeps underestimating herself and her capabilities, almost scared to stand out to much and to fail。 A bit of a try-hard。 There were times (specially at the beginning of the book) were she got on my nerves, but I was quick to get over it and forgive her because it made her seem all the more human。 She has an immense power, and not just her magical power, but also her relentless search for answers。 I like the dynamic between her and Nico, and her and Tristan。I honestly thought Tristan was going to be a stoic, no non-sense fuckboy, and oh boy was I wrong。。。 Talk about a completly emotionally scarred man, with a penchant for putting himself down, and who is at a complete loss about his own magical abilities。 I love how the author wrote his inner turmoils and how he wasn't afraid to show weakness, want or sadness。 I also love that the extent of his powers are an untapped possibility。Parisa is just an absolute mad woman, wreaking havoc left and right because why not?! Her strong suit is her sex appeal, her seduction, her mind games, manipulation and intelligence。 And I love it! A very powerful telepath who is unrivaled。Then we have Nico。 I love his dynamic with Libby - they are two halves of a whole, two faces of the same coin, two opposite sides of magnets forever pulling and pushing。 The writer describes it almost as if one cannot exist without the other。 They are meant to push each other to new limits, meant to be forever competitors and cataclysms to each other。 They have a sassy friendship, full of banter and undeniable chemistry。 I found Nico to also be an insanely loyal friend: the extent he is ready to go to help his friend Gideon is heart warming。Callum is the character I love to hate。。。 or should I say, hate to love? I hated him at the beginning because I thought he was just mean all the time。 That is until I understood that's all part of his defense mechanism for being a never seen force of nature empath。 Don't get me wrong - he's still an ass, but an intriguing one。Reina started out as pretty bland。 This character's only seemingly important trait was that she served as a «battery» for Libby and Nico's experiments。 She honeslty spent most of the book MIA。 However, there was this one scene where she and Nico are exploring new possibilites pertaining to their powers and we get a glimpse of some of the unseen potential Reina has yet to show us。 The whole book, we think the plot will be about the 6 candidates for initiation having to choose which of them will have to die so that the others can join the ranks of the society, until the last 100 pages where the plot suddenly and unexpectedly shifts。 I did not see that coming at all。I liked how all the characters' habilities somehow seemed to complete each other, and by the end of the book and the conversation between Ezra and Atlas, that seemed to be the case - except Libby was never supposed to get kidnapped, and Callum was always meant to be the one to die。 In the end, no one truly dies。 Libby is lost somewhere in another astral plane/dimension, and Callum is still alive, having joined the other 4 initiates in their oath to the society and with each other: that they will find Libby and the person responsible。 Meanwhile, trouble is brewing inside the Alexandrian society itself。。。I also have some theories about Dalton, Atlas, Gideon and Ezra (never trusted or liked this dude!) but I will not be sharing them in this review。Overall, I quite liked this book and will be looking forward for the next one, once it's released! 。。。more
